Meet the 2008-2009 AMCA Scholarship Winners

The AMCA Scholarship Committee is pleased to present the successful winners of our Scholarships for the academic year 2008-2009. Our congratulations to these outstanding young musicians! (See Scholarship winners 2008 announced!)

The Les Axdahl Award Winner **:
Mr. Jeffrey P. Krubsack
Mr. Krubsack has been a student of music since age nine. This began with piano and was followed by trumpet. This has progressed to playing for a variety of bands including, now the jazz band at St. Olaf College.
His first experience with vocal music expression was during high school when he was part of the Basilica of St. Mary Cathedral Choir. St. Olaf has provided a further opportunity in vocal music and he has sung with the St. Olaf Viking Chorus, Early Music Singers, and the St. Olaf Cantorei. As a music education major he will have the background to teach either, or both, vocal and instrumental music.
His stated goal is to teach and to paraphrase him; "to help students realize not only the tremendous possibilities of music but also the sheer enjoyment one can reach through music". He will be in his Junior year at St. Olaf in the Fall of 2008.
Congratulations to Mr. Krubsack for being awarded the $1200 Axdahl Award. This is the one special award given to that student candidate who receives the best evaluation.

This is Mr. Krubsack's first AMCA Scholarship award. He was sponsored by the Eagan Men's Chorus.

Mr. Anthony R. Meehl
Mr. Meehl has been singing in choir since 2nd grade elementary school. This evolved quickly into participation in musical programs and 'musicals', as presented by his family's church. Middle school required a choice of choir or band and he selected band. This provided a few years of musical experience in things other than singing. This involved piano in concert settings and playing percussion instruments in a jazz or marching band setting.
Fate stepped in help make a decision as he entered high school. A collar bone, broken during soccer practice, eliminated him from being able to carry drums in band. He switched to choir and sang with the school' concert choir for four years and also with the Dudley Birder Choral, an adult community choir, through St. Norbert College.
His studies at the University of Wisconsin have been aimed at a career of music education. At Eau Claire he sings with the Singing Statesmen and serves as an officer of this organization. An on-campus group named Fifth Element is an a cappella ensemble of six male voices. In this group he has been arranging music for their presentations. He is Business Manager of this group. This group has been providing music workshops in regional schools in Wisconsin and Minnesota. His very rounded musical experiences have provided him with a firm foundation for his planned career in teaching music. He plans to start with teaching at the elementary level and proceed from there.
In his own words he says; "I have one more year of college before I enter into the world of education and I simply cannot wait". He will be entering his Senior year in the Fall of 2008.
Congratulations to Mr. Meehl on being awarded his first AMCA Scholarship in the value of $1,000. He was sponsored by the Eau Claire Male Chorus.

Ms. Caitlin E. Nelson
Ms. Nelson's experiences while attending a Green Bay, Wisconsin area high school set her on her path towards musical education. Here she was involved in all vocal music programs including musical theater, extra curricular choir groups and a show choir. During this same time she was performing with a group called 'KIDS from Wisconsin'. This touring troupe presented singing and dance performances with a traveling variety show. She was student leader and dance captain within this organization. It provided her first opportunities to be a leader and mentor.
At the University of Wisconsin she has sung with the Women's Concert Chorale and the Concert Choir. Last year she was Vice-President of the Concert Choir and holds the position of President now. From these choirs she auditioned for and performed with a mixed voice a cappella group called Impromptu. This provided opportunities to arrange music as well as perform. She has been the Director of an annual Cabaret program for the past two years. She received a Cabaret scholarship for her work with the group. She has participated in several musical productions and was Assistant Chorus Master for the production of Merry Widow. She has received awards for her musical abilities: Viennese Ball music scholarship for her contributions to the university music program and the Morris Hayes Memorial Choral scholarship for an exemplary music education scholar.
As she enters her last year of university and student teaching she states; "I cannot wait to get out into the field and work to make a difference in student's lives".
Congratulations to Ms. Nelson on being awarded her first AMCA Scholarship in the value of $1,000. She was sponsored by the Eau Claire Male Chorus.

Mr. Johnathan F. Turba
Mr. Turba's experiences in music began early with piano at age ten, cello at age eleven and trombone and percussion by age twelve. As with many young boys he sang soprano at age ten and was Bass 2 by the time he was sixteen. His high school music experiences include Honors Band for percussion in 2003, Honors Orchestra for cello in 2004 and Honors Mixed Choir in 2005. He also played pit band for musical productions. His plans and decisions to study music were made firm when the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee men's chorus made a presentation at their school.
Studies at University in Eau Claire have evolved into music education. He is singing with this school's men's group called the Singing Statesmen and a mixed chorus Concert Choir. His participation with these groups includes singing or providing accompaniment on the piano. He is taking a well rounded music experience and education into the world of future music education.
In his words, paraphrased in part; "This myriad of directions to take truly excites me to bring music to as many lives as I can". He begins his Junior year at university in the Fall of 2008.
Congratulations to Mr. Turba on being awarded his first AMCA Scholarship in the value of $1,000. He was sponsored by the Eau Claire Male Chorus.

** Axdahl Award Winner
The Lester Axdahl Scholarship Award was established in 1998 to honor and recognize the tremendous contributions made to AMCA by Lester Axdahl. Les Axdahl faithfully and diligently served AMCA as Treasurer for over 30 years and he served as a Trustee of the Scholarship Fund from the fund's inception in 1980.
