2003 Contest Results

Chair Harry Learoyd reported that to date there were no submissions and suggested that if there are no responses by the due date, July 1, 2003, AMCA should consider cancelling the contest. Harry also mentioned that since the winning compositions were not being purchased and used by member choruses. It's apparent the contest is not performing the service for which it was intended.

"... I encourage the use of the past winning compositions. I am sure that most choruses have learned "Friend", by Jeff English, that was to have been the theme song for the Lansing Big Sing. Our own chorus, The Queensmen of Toronto, has used it extensively during the last two years and has enjoyed presenting it to our audiences."

I'm sorry that you have not received the results of the Music Contest - 2000. There are several reasons for this, one being my lack of experience with this form of communication and the second, which is more related to the topic at hand, we do not have a publisher for the 2000 winning selection.

As you are probably aware, the executive made provision for two prizes: a first award with a value of $300.00 and a second place award of $200.00.

First Prize Winner - Friend by Jeff English of Lansing, Michigan

I gave Jeff the opportunity to seek out a publisher but he had not found one as of a month ago. I took up the torch on his behalf, but have been equally unsuccessful up to this date.

Second Prize Winner - A Jubilation by Kendall Crosby, Bend, Oregon (Lyrics by Blake Steel)
This work had been sung previously from manuscript but had never been published and I have not heard from Ms. Crosby as to whether or not she has had it published.

Since we have had difficulty having the winning selections published, and the ones that have been published (There's A Wideness In God's Mercy (1998) and Holy Peace (1999), have had little response, I will be making a proposal to the executive that we look into a limited publication of the winners on a trial basis for one year. I have been exploring the possibility.

Sincerely, Harry Learoyd, Music Contest Chair

I have been assured that copies of the 1999 contest winning composition will be available for me to take to the Spring meeting in June. The selection, Holy Peace, composed by David Brun, has been given by the composer to Leslie Music Supply of Oakville, Ontario to publish. The publisher has assured me that the new composition will be available through their many contacts with music suppliers in the United States and Canada when choruses are prepared to order.

Re: There's A Wideness In God's Mercy, the 1998 winning selection. This work is now almost ready for publication and I hope to have copies of it for all participants at the meeting in June.
