Topic: Web Site Use
Comments: To the AMCA Directors:
I have found another reason to thank AMCA for the web site and the work of Dave Thomas. When I found that I would be moving from Kenosha (Milwaukee Male Chorus) to the Twin Cities area, I contacted Dave about putting in a note on my wanting to continue conducting a male chorus, and I would also be looking for a church choir. Through several contacts, I found (or they found me) the South St. Paul Male Chorus. We had our first rehearsal last Monday, and what a fine group! They certainly welcomed me with some wonderful singing, and I know they would also welcome other Twin City area men interested in singing. My thanks to the AMCA web site for getting us together.
I was also looking for a church choir, but instead found the "Minnetonka Choral Reflections" chamber choir. This is a small select SATB group which performs throughout the Twin City area. It is sponsored by the Music Association of Minnetonka of which the choir is one of five choirs sponsored by this group. What a change of pace. I think I needed something new, and I found it. (We could use 2 or 3 more experienced bass voices, however.) It keeps me in contact with the SATB situation, which I wanted, but without the weekly church service. I do miss my church choir (first time in over 20 years I have not been directing one) but Reflections is an outstanding group to take the place of church music for me.
Directors: we need more people to share the use of the web site. I found its' use in a way I never expected.

Topic: Twin Cities Choruses
Comments: Upper Mid-West Twin Cities Choruses:
I will be moving from Kenosha to Minnetonka sometime this spring -- probably mid-May. I would appreciate any information on a male chorus looking for a director. I would like to stay with an AMCA chorus, but would consider others. I would also be willing to be a substitute director if a chorus needs one.
Also, I would like to know if there are any openings for a senior choir director in an ELCA Lutheran Church. I have directed in other denominations, but would prefer ELCA. My experience has also been in the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church (and two high schools), the Episcopal Church, and the Methodist Church. Also -- I might be dreaming -- but it would be nice to be close to Minnetonka as I find the Minneapolis drivers to be absolutely wild! (I would rather drive in downtown Chicago!)
I don't like losing my ties to AMCA, so if you know of any opening for a director I would greatly apreciate being able to audition. And remember to keep singing and give yourself a brighter day.

Topic: TTB music for male chorus Song called, Jimmy Brown
Comments: Anthony, I have sent your request out to several directors in the AMCA. I hope you will receive some responses from them. I am familiar with this Selection and used to sing it in a barbershop arrangement years ago. I have not seen it published recently (I did the usual search on http://jwpepper.com and came up with no results). Both of our databases on the AMCA web site have meager results for this selection and I am not sure that these are even the same piece.

I will look through my old barbershop music and see if I can find a single copy of the selection that I remember. Sometimes it takes awhile to do that and I may not find the selection that I remember. If you had a single copy, would you be able to duplicate it (with permission, of course)?
I have also looked on the SPEBSQSA web site but find no data base to their music (since I am no longer a member there). You might be able to find a barbershop arrangement through them

Topic: Walter Ehret's copyright permission
Comments: I am looking for a copy of When the Saints Come Marching In arranged by Walter Ehret, published by Jack Spratt Publishing Company. I have had no success in finding one; therefore, I'm seeking permission to photocopy the one original copy I have. Unfortunately, no one seems to know who has the copyright. I've been told Spratt Publishing was bought out by another company who was in turn bought out by Colla Voce. I spoke with a representative here who said they did not purchase that title. I am needing written permission or one more original copy for competition March 11. Does anyone have any ideas or help?

Topic: Bless The Lord O My Soul
Comments:
John,
You did not indicate that you were an AMCA member.
I assume that you have found this reference on the Shared Libraries that are on the web. The Shared Libraries are a listing of music (old as it is) that is in the libraries of (some) individual choruses. It is a convenience listing only without any obgligations for loaning or borrowing music to other choruses.
If you are an AMCA member, I would make available to you the contact persons for the (known) choruses that have copies of this selection and you would have to "negotiate" with them for any "borrowing or lending" of their music. Contact me about your AMCA membership and I will do my best to put you in touch with the necessary people

Comments: I have just accessed the AMCA web site to find two telephone numbers. Thank you Dave Thomas for a most user friendly site. The info available on the site covers every aspect of the AMCA business. An excellent advertisement for the AMCA Organiztion.!
As President of the Ontario District I ask this question:
"Where are all the singers who should be registering for the Lansing International Sing?" According to the numbers passed along to me the Ontario District has an 85% total of members registered for the Sing.
A friendly challenge from up north...does any other district have a percentage close or better?
Let's support the effort of our Lansing colleagues.

Maybe a few of you would like to "be involved" in discussing the "Memorization vs Printed Score" topic. This issue was brought to our attention again in a recent article by AMCA Historian, Robert Woodland. Read the article and "Cast your vote!" (Noting so serious but just an interesting chance for input!)
See the article first and "Cast Your Vote". Then make your comments if you like.

Topic: Canadian Choral Composer
Comments: Hello,
I am a Canadian composer with many choral works in my catalogue, including some arrangements of Christmas music for Mens' Chorus. For the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Television production, "Christmas on the Prairies", filmed at Fort Edmonton in 1980, I was asked to arrange "The March of the 3 Kings" and "Les Anges dans nos Campagnes (Angels We have Heard on High)" for mens' voices. The results can be heard on my website - www.members.shaw.ca/rhannah1. Click on "Choral Works" to the right of my picture on the homepage. If you are interested in performing either of them, please let me know. I will be pleased to send the music via mail or email for perusal.

Topic: chorus in Oklahoma?
Comments: I have just moved here from Port Huron, MI. Here is Lawton, OK. I was a member of the Port Huron Schubert Male Chorus for about 15 years, and was hoping to find a chorus here. I have been unable to find one, except for a SPEBSQSA group, and I don't care for barbershop singing. They mess up the music too much. Guess I'm a purist--I like music the way the composer writes it. Can you help me find a chorus near here? Would be greatly appreciated.

Topic: Big Sing, Cardiff ,Wales ,2003
Comments: Dear Mr. President,
We are inviting your choir to the largest-ever gathering of male choirs in a concert. The Big Sing next year in Cardiff, Wales will feature two hundred choirs and 10,000 choristers, as well as a symphony orchestra and a world class soloist. We'd like your choir to join them.
Our programme will be a carefully-chosen mix of old and new, with some items you already known and others you will be pleased to add to your repertoire. We'll be singing in the Millennium Stadium - one of the most modern and thrilling venues in the world - in aid of a leading cancer charity.
Wales and especially Cardiff offers much to visitors. Set between the valleys and the sea, Cardiff is the heart and capital of Wales. The thriving cultural tradition goes back thousands of years, to poets older than King Arthur. The industrial heritage is just as powerful. Much of the British Empire was powered by Welsh coal and engineered with Welsh steel. Cardiff is also the port from where many a Welsh family left the old world for a new life in the United States - among them the forebears of our conductor, Owain Arwel Hughes.
More than a century on, the time of steel and coal have almost passed away. The industrial valleys are returning to their original green. Cardiff itself is now a thriving, sophisticated city, the fastest-growing in Europe, and one of the biggest and best shopping destinations in Britain.
As organisers, we intend visiting the USA in March/April 2002. We would be delighted to meet with you and other choirs. An early response will help us plan just where we will be going.
Fraternal greetings

World of Male Voices 2003
When was the last time the hairs stood up on the back of your neck?
Male choral singing is one of the great cultural traditions. The World of Male Voices 2003 will be maintaining these traditions and offer an exciting and innovative repertoire covering traditional and modern music, songs from the shows and a wide variety of modern and classical pieces.
How fast can your toes tap?
The World of Male Voices 2003 will stir the spirits and stiffen the spines of ten of thousands of ordinary people who usually attend concerts in theatres, churches and cathedrals. For the choristers, it will be a rare - for many, unique - chance to experience the thrill of performing live in an international arena. With up to 10,000 male choristers from five continents, in the 72,000-seat Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes, and featuring a full orchestra and a world famous soloist, this concert is a world event. The promoters are in discussion with broadcasting and recording organisations to ensure the widest possible audience. Everyone involved will know they arte fund-raising for the leading Wales-based cancer charity TENOVUS The concert will gladden their hearts and swell the coffers of TENOVUS the renowned Welsh Cancer Research Charity.
Will you accepted the challenge?
This is an international festival of male choirs in 13 July 2003. It is independent of any single choir, and is being organised by experienced professionals in consultation with the National Association of Choirs of Great Britain and the Wales Association of Male Choirs. Over 140 choirs and 7000 choristers have already committed to it. If you accept our invitation, you will be singing with some of the world’s finest amateur male choirs in a magnificent stadium, built for the Rugby World Cup 1999, in the centre of the beautiful Welsh city, Cardiff.
We can arrange hotel accommodation in or near Cardiff at a range of prices. We can also arrange pre- and post-festival tours for overseas choirs. The possibility of twinning will enable choirs to create new links with choirs.
The programme will be of popular male voice music, so that you will already know much of the work, reducing your learning. Choristers will be singing without music copies on stage. There will be some new music that you will be able to enjoy singing in your own concerts. The format will be first tenor, second tenor, first bass (baritone) and second bass.
Choir will not be asked to pay to take part, but will meet their own costs. A meal will be provided for choristers between afternoon rehearsal and the evening performance on July 13.
Please let us know whether you are interested. In your reply, please include a contact name and address (and e-mail if possible), the number of choristers in each voice section and 30 word description of your choir.
