Subject: Rehearsal Recordings for Big Sing 2008 Massed Chorus Music

These recordings are provided for individuals to become "very familiar" with the Massed Chorus Music for Big Sing 2008. It is hoped that individual singers will bring their music to the computer (or trust your memory if you like), click the selection to download it and sing along to practice music for the Massed Chorus. If all singers know their music, the Massed Chorus Rehearsal should be very enjoyable in experiencing the joy of singing with so many other singers. If you are reading this, give it a try!!!! Just click the image link to the right or CLICK HERE.

(Friday Evening) Adjudicated Concert
The BIG SING weekend will open with an adjudicated concert on Friday evening, April 25, tentatively starting at 7:00 p.m. This event will be held at the First Lutheran Church, 1005 Oxford Avenue, Eau Claire. First Lutheran has a beautifully appointed sanctuary with ample seating (cushioned pews), good lighting, integral sound system and adjacent parking. It also has ground level entry and an elevator to the sanctuary if needed.
All AMC of A member choruses are invited to participate. To do so will mean singing two memorized selections of contrasting styles for your audience of peers and a panel of adjudicators. This is not a contest, but rather an opportunity to improve your technique and get some tips from another director. We will have an outstanding panel of adjudicators on hand. After you sing you will meet with one of them for suggestions and commentary. This has been a "tradition" in the Upper Mid-West District for some time and it is a very enjoyable evening. Each chorus will need to submit their selections in advance, probably some time in February, 2008.
Chair of this event is Ron Mastin. Ron is the former Music Director at Eau Claire North High School and currently Music Director of St. John's Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. He is available for your questions and able to assist you - Email or (715) 832-0675. No ticket is required for the adjudicated concert. The International AMC of A has generously underwritten the Friday evening and Saturday morning events.

(Saturday Morning) Workshops and Sight Reading
Saturday morning, April 26 will start early (about 8 a.m.) with continental breakfast and an opportunity to attend one or more workshops. On Saturday morning we will be on the campus of the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, at the Haas Fine Art Center. After the workshops the UW-Eau Claire Singing Statesmen (about 75 strong) will lead us through about one hour of sight reading. The Statesmen, under the direction of Dr. Gary Schwartzhoff, will rehearse the sight reading selections so we will have a good idea of how they sound. Singing along will also be a treat.
Speaking of a treat, the Singing Statesmen will "top off" the morning with a mini-concert just before lunch. For your interest, the Eau Claire Male Chorus pays the AMC of A Associate Member dues for this group and several of them have been AMC of A scholarship winners.
Chairman of the Saturday morning events is Ernie Loga. Ernie is a long time member of our Baritone section and is available to answer your questions about Saturday morning. Contact him at 715 832-3268 or Email. Again, there is no cost to participate on Saturday morning because of the generosity of AMC of A International.
Email to Ernie Loga

(Saturday) Ladies Luncheon
About the time chorus members are winding up their morning at the Haas Fine Art Center, ladies will be starting their luncheon activities at the Holiday Inn Campus, 2703 Craig Road, in Eau Claire. In addition to lunch there will be entertainment, drawings and lots of fun for all the ladies. This is a ticketed event and will be part of a "Ladies Package".
Chair of this event is Jean Schroeder whose husband Jere is our BIG SING Co-Chairman. She can be reached at 715 839-8059, or Email.
Email to Jean Schroeder (Jere)

(Saturday Afternoon) Massed Concert and Solo Chorus Rehearsal
Following lunch singers will proceed to Zorn Arena on the UW- Eau Claire campus for massed concert and solo chorus rehearsal. There will be 9 massed chorus numbers and 8 solos are also planned. Solo choruses will be determined by each AMC of A District so check with your Governors on who will be soloing from your district. We will be after you by Christmas time to find out which choruses will be soloing from your district and their selections.
Email to David Fehr

(Saturday Evening) BIG SING Concert
Zorn arena will hold approximately 2000 plus the singers. We have set a goal to fill all the seats. If you want to sing for an audience this is the place to be on Saturday evening, April 26, 2008 starting at 7:00 p.m.
Bob Wierman, President of the Eau Claire Male Chorus will be chairing the Saturday evening concert and you can contact him at 715 720-9092, or Email. This is a ticketed event for the public and non-chorus members (spouses). Ticket information is available (9 Jan 08), and includes package rates for AMC of A member spouses.

(Saturday Evening) Afterglow
The Afterglow will be held immediately following the concert at Regis High School, 2100 Fenwick Avenue in Eau Claire. Regis is a short bus ride from the university campus and is spacious for a large crowd. Our co-chairs Norb Lehmann and Dick Harrison have plenty of experience organizing afterglows so expect a good time. Plan to stay awhile; we may have some surprises in store for you. This is a ticketed event for members and spouses. It will be part of the week-end package to try to keep costs to a minimum. Direct your Afterglow questions to Norb Lehmann at 715 834-1081, or Email.

    Lodging or Special Information

    Lodging and other Details
We hope to hear soon that you plan to attend; hopefully no later than November 1, 2007. If you cannot decide by then, Contact the Big Sing 2008 Chairs.

There are a number of nice hotels and motels in Eau Claire. The convention bureau will send or email a list with rates so you can make your own arrangements. We have not reserved blocks of rooms at any hotels or motels. As some choruses will be coming from quite a distance we will want to know where you are staying and your arrival plans. One of our ECMC members will be on hand to greet and guide you during your stay in Eau Claire. Keep tuned to the AMC of A web site for more on the BIG SING 2008.

If a chorus notifies me they are coming I will contact the bureau and they will send information. Otherwise the chorus can contact the bureau and they will email it. Chippewa Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau, 715 831-2345. They are with the program as far as sending things to Big Sing choruses. http://www.chippewavalley.net/

Comments: Attention Friday Night Recital Choruses:

We still need copies of your music for the adjudicators on Friday night. We have music from some of you but need it in advance if possible. We will have 4 judges so we need 4 copies of each piece being performed.

If already sent: Thank you. If not please send the 4 copies of each piece to: Ron Mastin or Mike Theiste

If you have already provided 3 copies of each piece please provide an extra copy to the judges upon arrival at First Lutheran on Friday April 25.

Topic: Big Sing 2008 Music Information
    Comments: Gentlemen,
As the chairman of the 2008 Big Sing music committee, I am requesting that all participating choruses send me a list of the numbers that they will be performing both at the Friday night adjudication concert (so we can get those to the Judges), and for the solo numbers at the massed concert on Saturday night (so we don't have any duplicate numbers being sung), along with the name of the director and accompanist for those numbers.

We need to get this information ASAP so that we can get the programs printed up for these events. If you could please submit this information by no later than March 3rd, 2008, it would be greatly appreciated.

Send information to (email addresses are not displayed on this web site - use your password to obtain the email address on the contact page or contact the web manager). We are very excited to be hosting the Big Sing this year and we are looking forward to singing with you and hearing your performances! Thank you!

    Topic: "Soon-Ah Will Be Done"
Comments: Some questions for the director of "Soon-Ah Will Be Done":
Question 1) The 1934 copyright arrangement doesn't have the "de world" repeat on pages 5 & 9 that the later arrangements have. Can we assume that the later arrangements are the ones being used?
Question 2) Are we singing the words "as is" ... (... just want to make sure everybody's on the same page!)
Question 3) Page 10 has "First time semi-chorus, second time full chorus". Are you going to have a semi-chorus or will everybody be singing both times?

Topic: Music Questions about Big Sing 2008!!!
    Comments: Help!!
Question #1: I have seen no information on who is directing what at the Big Sing.
Question #2: As a followup to #1, what language is to be used on "Praise Ye The Lord", English or Latin??
Question #3: There are 6 sections in "Soon-Ah Will Be Done" that have repeats. The assumption is that all 6 will, indeed, be repeated as written. Please confirm.
Question #4: Also in "Soon-Ah ...", the assumption is that we are using the dialect as written in the lyrics. That brings the word "de" into the spotlight. A common tendency is to say "dee" (long E), which is probably incorrect, a subtlety that was brought out at the Buffalo Big Sing in 1998, but was poorly followed up on by the choruses. In this dialect, most initial "th" combinations are replaced by "d", so "this" becomes "dis", "there" becomes "dere", "then" becomes "den", and so forth. It becomes clear that "de" represents the word "the" and should rhyme with it, so that the actual pronunciation should be more like "duh" than anything else -- certainly not "dee".
